Prospective Students
The Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center guides students toward meeting the requirements for their desired degree-granting college. The advising staff can help prospective students transition to UNM and on their path to becoming a current student.
You are a prospective student if you have not applied to UNM but are considering applying to UNM. If you are looking into a health science major or are undecided, you are welcome to speak with one of our advisors on how to become a student at UNM. If you are looking into another major, you will need to speak to the college of your prospective major. A list of all the degrees offered at UNM can be found in the University Catalog, and they are organized by college.
If you are not currently looking to transfer to UNM now but will be in the future, please take a look at our Transfer Equivalency System (TES) to see if your previous and/or current coursework will transfer to UNM. If your courses do not transfer, an advisor can give you guidance as to what to expect if you choose to enroll at UNM. We are here to help you make the right decision towards your academic goals.

Steps to Become a UNM Student
- Apply to UNM
The first step is to apply to UNM. You can apply online at the Office of Admissions webpage.
- Send your transcripts and ACT or SAT scores
If applicable, please send your transcripts from high school and/or all other universities or colleges attended and your test scores. These are vital to your course placement.
- Attend an Orientation
After you have been accepted to the university, you must attend an orientation. The Dean of Students hosts New Student Orientation for freshmen and transfer students each semester.
- Meet with an advisor
Freshmen will have their first meeting during New Student Orientation. Transfer students can meet with an advisor before, during or after orientation, with a preference to meet beforehand. You must expect to meet with an advisor every semester to discuss the upcoming semester’s courses. As a new student, you will receive a hold on your account to ensure you fulfill this requirement.
- Register for classes
After all of your registration holds are removed, you will be able to register for classes through your MyUNM account
